Sweet Briar College's Department of Government and International Affairs offers a diversified program in the study of politics, law, and global affairs. Four faculty members offer over two dozen courses ranging from Islamic politics and globalization to media politics and American political development. The department contains three distinct curricula: the majors in Government, International Relations, and the Law & Society program.

Along with English and Psychology, our majors are among the most popular at Sweet Briar.

Our current and recent students have garnered internships at the European Parliament, the Genocide Prevention Center, the United States Supreme Court, in both houses of Congress, and at the White House, as well as in state and local agencies in Richmond and Lynchburg.

Recent graduates can be found at major law schools and graduate programs at the University of Chicago, the Universities of Texas and Virginia, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, American University's program in Conflict Resolution, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, the graduate program in public health law at Emory University Law School, and at the graduate program in public administration at Syracuse University.

Graduates of the recent past can be found working in the United States State Department, at the Nuclear Nonproliferation Program of the State & Defense Departments, in the Secret Service, in the Peace Corps, as key staffers in the Senate and House of Representatives, working for lobbying and public relations firms, teaching high school history, practicing environmental law, and screenwriting in Hollywood.
